Opening hours: 10:00 to 18:00
Value: €1.00

IMPORTANT TIPS

WHAT TO SEE

From the viewpoint at Farol de Nazaré it is now possible to see everything that happens there and take great photos. Access to the lighthouse is optional and I recommend it. For just €1 you will see a surfing museum where there are several surfboards from surfers who passed by and some explanations of the phenomenon of giant waves.

DID YOU KNOW?

The giant wave season happens during the Portuguese winter and we can never predict when the sea will be rough, leave this to be researched at most a week before your trip.

HISTORY

  • Legend 1 – Sec 8

  • King Rodrigo was the last Visigoth king who fled to Nazareth dressed as a beggar

  • He fled with a Roman monk who carried an image of the Virgin Mary breastfeeding Jesus

  • At the tip of the rock that extends over the sea, in a small cave, they hid the image

  • In the 14th century, monks from Alcobaça ordered the construction of a hermitage

  • Legend 2 – Sec 12

  • D. Fuas Roupinho was hunting in this region, in the middle of a great fog, when his hunt, a deer, jumped from the abyss (as if it were the devil wanting to take D. Fuas to hell), but just before falling he evoked V. Maria and miraculously the horse stopped, leaving two legs suspended

  • Legend 3 – Sec 16

  • Vasco da Gama would have made a pilgrimage to Nazareth to ask for the blessing.

  • He would have taken a rosary from the image's hand and exchanged it for a gold chain. When he was on the high seas, in the middle of huge waves, he would have thrown the rosary into the ocean and the waves calmed down.
