A rare case of a Roman temple that went through several invasions by people who worshiped other gods.

HISTORY
Mistakenly known as the temple of Diana (Goddess of the Hunt)
Legend created in the 17th century by a Jesuit who wrote a book where he launched this assumption, but there is no indication that proves this theory
But in sec. 16 had the exaltation of the past and it was a period in which they had to be nationalists to show neighboring countries who Portugal was, after the Philippine dynasty.
Built in honor of Emperor Augustus (Considered God)
In such a peripheral province of the Roman Empire, the temple was dedicated to the imperial cult and that was when the emperor became a deity and needed this approval in such a distant region.
Destroyed by barbarians in the 16th century. 5
It remained preserved because it served as a slaughterhouse and thus was no longer seen as a temple.
During excavations in the surrounding area, a sculpture of a female hand holding a fruit was found. Probably from the goddess JUNO (goddess of fertility, food)
It had a water mirror that surrounded it on 3 sides
It had mortar and was painted. Contained marble
