IMPORTANT TIPS

QUEUES

Understand the queues: The one you see in the photo is a queue for those who are going to buy to take away, inside there is room for 250 people and if there is a queue, it will be smaller than the one you will see on the street

WHAT TO SEE

Sit back and enjoy a pastry shop from 1838 that invented pastel de belém. It's a common pastry shop, you can order a hot mix (mixed toast), grilled bread (toast) like a regular bakery!

HISTORY

  • In 1836 a law was enacted that extinguished Religious Orders in Portugal

  • As a result, the monks were left without their former activity and could no longer make a living from the church. Many went hungry and the promise of government aid never arrived.

  • Therefore, in 1837, monks from the Jerónimos order decided to sell the sweets they usually made inside the monastery.
