HISTORY

  • Traces of occupation since the 4th century BC (Iron Age) and traces of fortresses since the 1st century BC

  • There are traces of the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians

  • Conquered once and for all by the Christians in 1147 by Afonso D. Henriques after 3 months of siege.

  • It was the venue for Vasco da Gama's reception after the discovery of the routes to India.

  • Destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and restored in 1940 and 1990
